BOSTON, MA – November 23, 2009 – Lights, music and hot chocolate will warm up the East Boston

Greenway on Saturday, December 5th from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. during Winter Lights Along the Greenway, unique event that promotes enjoying the Greenway during winter. Boston Natural Areas Network and Friends of the East Boston Greenway invite participants of all ages to celebrate the winter’s darkest days with glowing lights, camaraderie and song.

Over 1000 luminarias, candles set in weighted paper bags created by community volunteers, will light up the greenway beginning at the blue caboose near the Greenway entrance at South Bremen and Marginal Streets, and they’ll stretch a half-mile to Porter Street near the East Boston YMCA. Music will be performed by East Boston’s own Zumix Youth Choir and other local carolers. All voices are encouragedto join in a sing-along. Hot chocolate and cookies will be provided. The rain/snow date is Sunday, December 6th.

The East Boston Greenway, once a railroad corridor, is now Boston parkland with a path for walking, running or bike riding. It offers 2.5 miles of protected and quiet paths and will eventually extend from Piers Park at Boston’s Inner Harbor to Belle Isle Marsh Reservation.

Boston Natural Areas Network is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing together local residents, partner organizations, public officials and foundations to preserve, expand and enhance urban open space, including community gardens, greenways and urban wilds. For further information about the organization, becoming a member or the calendar of events, visit www.bostonnatural.org, or call 617-542-7696.
