November 14, 2011 - East Boston, MA - The Jeffries Point
Neighborhood Association will host State Senator Anthony Petruccelli
(D-East Boston) and State Representative Carlo Basile (D-East
Boston) during their monthly meeting, tonight at 7:00 PM at the
Jeffries Point Yacht Club, 565 Sumner St. E. Boston, Ma. 02128
617-500-7865.
The pair are supporters of the legislation that is due out of
committee later this week before the legislature goes out on a seven
week hiatus. They also attended a recent meeting of the Eagle Hill
Civic Association on the same topic. They were met with vocal
opposition from community members who asked whether, they had
considered the long term impacts on our community. "Doesn't East
Boston do enough for the state?", one member asked, "We have the
tunnels and the airport; we don't need this in our neighborhood."
David Monge, a life long East Boston resident, father of four and
member of the opposition group, Neighbors Of Suffolk Downs
commented, "We don't need anything that comes with a mitigation
plan. We have enough to mitigate already in East Boston without the
prospect of a casino in the mix." This sentiment was shared by most
of the attendees, in fact, no one spoke up in favor of a planned
casino at Suffolk Downs.
"Casinos may be a nice place to visit, but no one wants to live
there and that's the prospect we're faced with in our community,"
said John Ribeiro, president of Neighbors of Suffolk Downs. "Casino
proponents have been trying to move this bill quickly and quietly
through the legislature and tonight may be the final opportunity for
the people of East Boston to let their representatives know how they
feel on this critical issue."
