District 7 in EB
Reports: 2011 Crime Down 16%
by Captain Frank Mancini, Commander,
District 7
East Boston
In 2011, East Boston saw a 16%
reduction in overall crime. This reduction is the largest crime
reduction of any other neighborhood or section of the City of
Boston.
This follows a 5.5% reduction in
crime the previous year in 2010. In the past two years crime has
been reduced almost 20%. The overall crime rate in East Boston in
2011 was the lowest in at least 8 years, going back to 2005.
Looking at Property Crime in 2011,
East Boston saw a 25% reduction in residential burglary, and a 47%
drop in commercial breaks of businesses in the community. Auto
thefts also went down 25% in 2011, and car break-ins were lowered
21%.
Looking at Violent Crime, or crime
against persons, we saw aggravated assaults drop 6.5%, this followed
a 30% drop in 2010. Robberies stayed about even in 2011 following a
20% drop in 2010.
Unfortunately we had 2 homicides in
2011, one suspect was arrested and another identified. Neither
homicide was a random event, but in both incidents the parties knew
each other and the general public was not in danger.
During 2012, the Officers of District
7 will continue to do their best to prevent crime with the help of
the community.
