Hockey Wrap-up Week 5 |
M.E.B. hockey squads continue parity play this week in the Valley League as well
as the first round of the 2013 Boston Mayor’s Cup Hockey Tournament.
Mite K
The Mite K Team had a big weekend taking two victories in the 2013 Mayor’s Cup
on a full ice format, something many of the players had never done before. With
a win on Saturday in South Boston and Sunday at UMass Boston the Mites move on
to the semi-final round at Northeastern University next weekend.
Mite S
Malden/East Boston 5, Dorchester 6
With only seven skaters and all but one playing their first full ice game, the
M.E.B Mite Stoneham team took to the ice against a full Dorchester squad.
Arnoldo Lopez had 2 goals in his Mite debut while Anthony Defilippo, Anthony
Messina, and GiGi DiMarco each had one goal apiece. Excellent goaltending by
Matt Cochran. The Mite S squad moves on to the second round at UMass Boston next
weekend
SQUIRT (9-10 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 2, East Coast Wizards 1
Valley Forum, Malden MA
The undefeated M.E.B. Squirts fought against an all-girl East Coast Wizard
squad. Brendan Curtis got M.E.B. on the board first with an unassisted goal in
the 1st period. The 2nd period saw the Wizards fight back to score early in the
period. It was back and forth until Sean Horkan potted one with help from Nick
Summers and that’s how it ended 2-1.
Additionally, the Squirts beat Hyde Park on Sunday to advance to the semi-final
round of the Mayor’s Cup tournament.
PEEWEE (11-12 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 4, Somerville 7
Veterans Rink, Somerville MA
With only 8 skaters, the Pewee's took on Somerville in Somerville. It was a 0-3
score going into the final period when the Peewees found the inner strength to
fight back. At 10:03 Bethan Taddeo broke up a breakaway, passed up ice to a
moving John Bernbaum who passed on a rail to Ronan Valarese who quick sticked it
to make it 1-3. With 6:15 left in the 3rd Somerville drew the defense off the
net and their hanger potted the puck to make it 1-4. Seconds later Bernbaum bent
it into the corner of the opposing net to make it 2-4. A loose puck and a lucky
shot put Somerville up 2-5. One more for the home team made it 2-6. M.E.B.
pulled the goalie with three minutes remaining but even with two defensemen
guarding the net Somerville scored to make it 2-7. M.E.B. was tired and hurting
but never gave up on a Corey Rufo faceoff win which was passed up ice to a
jetting Bernbaum who picked up his own rebound to make it 3-7. With just seconds
remaining the Mustangs Sam Fosdick fought hard in the corner to dig out the
puck, pass up ice to Valarese who served up a beauty with time running out to
end the game M.E.B. 4 Somerville 7.
In the Boston Mayor's Cup Tournament a schedule snafu found the Mustangs playing
a 9:00 pm in Dorchester on Saturday night and an 8:00 pm game at Northeastern on
Sunday night. Things did not go the Peewee's way and their run in the double
elimination tournament has come to an end.
BANTAM AAA (13-14 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 2, New Hampshire East 2
Valley Forum, Haverhill MA
In Bantam AAA action the boys faced New Hampshire East on Saturday night. Sloppy
play in the first had them struggling to stay in the game giving up the period
to a 0-1 deficit. With hopes fading, Ryan Noonan dug deep and put on a show
going the distance on a defensive zone dish from Zach Rich to tie up the game on
Noonan's short-handed beauty. Entering the third period and the boys still
looking far from themselves, they did manage a power play goal from Noonan
giving him credit for all of M.E.B.'s goals and despite a last ditch attack in
final minutes it ended tied.
Malden/East Boston 1, Belmont 2
Valley Forum, Malden MA
The Bantam’s hit the hometown ice Sunday afternoon to take on Belmont. In the
1st Louis Staffieri sent James Pandolfo off to the races on a beautiful neutral
zone pass. Pandolfo screamed in on the opposing net undressing the netminder
with a quick move, only 12 seconds into the game and M.E.B. was on top 1-0.
However Belmont took advantage of slow skating and tied it up. With no step in
their game, M.E.B. surrendered a second goal in the middle period to go down
2-1. They weather the storm in the third but suffered their first loss of the
season. Bright spots continue to focus on the great play of goaltender Anthony
Giuliano who made some amazing saves to keep these games close.
Top of Form
Bottom of Form
BANTAM AA (13-14 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 8, Dedham 1
Simoni Rink, Cambridge MA
The Mustangs got on the scoreboard early and often in a high-scoring victory
over the Dedham Bantam AA team. Ryan Tosto had four goals and one assist, Curtis
Taddeo had two goals and three assists, Nick Capillo had a goal and an assist,
and Anthony Nastari added two assists. Paul Gennetti added a late goal to close
out the scoring. Thomas Guarino was solid between the pipes for the Mustangs.
Malden/East Boston 5, Burlington 1
Ice Palace, Burlington MA
The Mustangs traveled to Burlington on Sunday to take on the Burlington Bantam
AA team in a physical, penalty-filled game. Backed by the solid goaltending of
Thomas Guarino, the M.E.B. boys overcame a 1-0 deficit by scoring five
unanswered goals after the midway point of the contest. Burlington got on the
score sheet early with a goal five minutes into the game. Guarino kept the
Mustangs in the game with several big saves, including a huge save on a
breakaway to keep the deficit at one.
It remained a 1-0 Burlington lead until four minutes remained in the second
period. M.E.B.'s Nick Capillo lit the lamp, assisted by Anthony Nastari and Ryan
Tosto. A little less than two minutes later, Niko Spadafora scored the first of
his two goals, assisted by Tosto. Less than one minute later, Anthony Nastari
added another goal, assisted by Curtis Taddeo.
M.E.B. took a 3-1 lead into the third period and continued to put pressure on
Burlington. Marty Taylor scored an unassisted goal off a nice individual effort
to increase M.E.B.'s lead to 4-1. N. Spadafora got M.E.B.'s final goal with
assists from Tosto and Taddeo.

Hockey Wrap-up Week 4 |
The M.E.B. hockey squads continue parity play this week in the
Valley League as the regular season begins in mid-October.
Mite K
Malden/East Boston 7, Melrose 13
Kasabuski Rink, Saugus MA
The Mite Valley team dropped a tough one to Melrose. Chris Cecca had
4 goals, Will Fosdick had 2 goals, and Jake Simpson added 1 goal.
Joe Hurley played his first ever game as goalie and held his own
against a very strong Melrose team.
Mite S
Malden/East Boston 1, Wakefield Black 4
Stoneham Arena, Stoneham MA
Gigi DiMarco scored his first career goal and Lucas Laverdi emerged
as a player to watch as M.E.B. struggled against Wakefield.
Christian Monge showed passion in net.
SQUIRT (9-10 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 4, Needham 1
St. Sebastians, Needham MA
The undefeated M.E.B. Squirts continue to dominate. In the 1st,
Brendan Curtis threaded his way to score unassisted. A minute later
Nick Summers found the back of the net with help from Joe Melanson.
Curtis put the squad up 3-1 in the 2nd and Sean Horkan closed the
door on Needham in the 3rd. The final 4-1 M.E.B.
PEEWEE (11-12 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 5, North Reading 5
Merrimack College, Andover, MA
The Squirts continued to work out the kinks in their armor in two
games over the weekend. North Reading scored first blood early but
Corey Rufo barreled down ice and forced one into the net to tie the
game 1-1. Ryan Gray capitalized on a rebound from John Bernbaum’s
blistering shot to end the 1st up 2-1. Anthony Bocchino showed his
literal flexibility in net, making some great pad saves.
In the 2nd, it was a back and forth affair with Tristan Goroshko
taking over the net minding duties with his fast glove. Shamus Royds
scored while cheating up from the defensive zone with two minutes
left in the 2nd. Seconds later Stevie Arsenault crashed the net to
score on a Brendan Curtis face off win. North Reading took one back
as the period was ending.
The 3rd period saw the return to form of pixie Bethan Taddeo, who
seemed to be everywhere the puck was and harassed North Reading
forwards throughout the game. N. Reading put the game in reach,
scoring less than a minute into the period. Royds and Ronan Valarese
played strong defense along with Sam Fosdick and the always reliable
Jake Laverde. N. Reading scored again halfway through the 3rd on a
breakaway to tie up the game. Curtis found his own rebound and
backhanded one in a minute later. Equipment is an important part of
a hockey game and M.E.B. learned it the hard way as a penalty for
not wearing a mouth guard found M.E.B. on the defensive short a man.
N. Reading capitalized and that’s how it ended, tied 5-5.
Malden/East Boston 3, Lynnfield/Saugus 8
Connery Arena, Lynn MA
It was a foggy morning outside but inside the rink things were
clear, the M.E.B. Peewee’s were facing their toughest opponent of
the season in the Lynnfield/Saugus Stars. Ryan Gray got the Mustangs
on the board early while Tristan Goroshko had a strong period in
net. M.E.B. was helped up front by the wheels of Nick LaConte but
with a minute remaining in the first the Stars potted two quick
goals to end the 1st.
John Bernbaum, with three Stars chasing him, caught up to a loose
puck and snapped one in to tie it all at 2.
Stars came right back with a quick wrister that deflected off of
Goroshko’s shoulder to take the lead. Kevin Ivany came took over in
net and the Stars scored twice more in the period to go up 5-2.
The Stars style of play was physical and began to wear on the nerves
of the M.E.B. squad who played most of the 3rd period serving a
penalty for retaliation for one hit after another. The Stars scored
3 more while the Mustangs tried to penalty kill. Bernbaum found the
netting one more time and M.E.B. skates away from the ice on the
wrong side of an 8-3 game.
BANTAM AAA (13-14 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 7, Charlestown 0
Allied Veterans Rink, Everett MA
In Bantam AAA action, the M.E.B. squad took on Charlestown who were
looking for their first win on the season and completely took
control of the ice, putting M.E.B. in survival mode for the entire
first period. Great goaltending by Anthony Giuliano kept the
Mustangs in this one, buying them time to shake the funk.
In the 2nd, Anthony Cecca stepped up 2 minutes into the second
picking up a nice rebound and sending it to the back of the net.
Slowly the M.E.B. boys began to take control, leading to a sweet
Ryan Noonan clinic, dancing through the opponents, throwing on the
brakes, shooting and sniping putting M.E.B.up 2-0. With a minute
left in the period, Nick Miller sent a beautiful dish giving Louis
Stafferi on a breakaway, juking the goalie and finishing with the
tally.
With total control now in MEB's hands, the third period showed much
of the same with Staffieri finishing a rebound off a nice blueline
play by Marty Taylor to catch a clearing high fly and sending the
shot on net. A minute later Staffieri sent a Doug Flutie like aerial
pass through the neutral zone to Jonah Carlson for his first of the
game. A minute later, Cecca tipping home a Carlson shot added yet
another. With 5 minutes remaining, James Pandolfo stuffed home a
Carlson rebound sending the score sheet to the locker room with a
7-0 final score.
Malden/East Boston 1, Burlington 1
Ice Palace, Burlington MA
The Bantam AAA's were sent a challenge by the Valley Hockey League,
asking them to face one of their Elite teams. So on Sunday night,
the boys took on their second game of the day to face the Burlington
Bantam Elite. Both teams sported undefeated records and M.E.B. was
motivated to prove themselves. The opening period saw a fantastic
display of back and forth hockey with both teams playing a
controlled physical game until a nasty hit from behind send M.E.B.
defenseman Noah Carlson to the locker room.
Showing signs of fatigue in the 2nd period, a loose puck in front of
the net and an uncovered foe parked out front sent the Burlington
squad ahead 1-0. No wanting to walk away from this one, M.E.B. dug
deep and tapped some hidden energy as they battled to slowly push
Burlington back on their heels. James Pandolfo banged home a rebound
off a Louis Staffieri shot evening up the. Despite dominating the
final minutes of the game, M.E.B. was unable to score the go-ahead
goal. Zach Rich thwarted Burlington’s last minute scoring threat and
broke up a big play preserving the 1-1 tie. A stellar effort by the
entire team and Anthony Giuliano provided the support between the
pipes to keep M.E.B. in the game from start to finish.
BANTAM AA (13-14 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 4, Wellesley 1
Simoni Ice Rink, Cambridge MA
The Malden/East Boston Bantam AA team defeated the Wellesley Bantam
team by a score of 4-1. Jared Downey got M.E.B. on the board with
an unassisted goal at 2:25 of the first period. Paul Gennetti scored
M.E.B.'s second goal at 11:10 of the first period, assisted by Ryan
Tosto and Ryan Goggin, to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
MEB increased its lead to 3-0 at the midway point of the second
period. Carson Tully scored off a beautiful pass from Anthony
Nastari. Marty Taylor also had an assist on the goal. Wellesley got
on the board with a power play goal with less than two minutes
remaining in the second period.
MEB's Ryan Tosto added an empty-net goal with 45 seconds remaining
in the game to close out the scoring. Thomas Guarino, with a strong
glove performance in goal, got the win for M.E.B. in a great team
effort.
MIDGET (15-18 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 2, Everett/Revere 1
Connery Arena, Lynn MA
The Midgets showed great chemistry and despite killing a two-man
penalty were able to come out of the first period with a 1-0 lead.
This was a result of some great defensive decision making by Dante
Cucuzza which was followed by Paul O'Callaghan putting the puck in
the back of the net. Despite starting the 2nd peiod on a powerplay
and a great breakaway from Danny Valente, M.E.B. couldn’t get past
the Everett goalie and the score was still 1-0 at the end of 2
periods. In the 3rd the intensity picked up on both sides of the
puck. Nick Bertocchi put one in the net on yet another power play
for M.E.B. Less than a minute later Everett/Revere was able to get
one passed M.E.B.’s focused goalie Calvin Taddeo, after making 2
unbelievable saves. Ev/Rev made a desperate attempt to tie up the
game by pulling their goalie in the last few minutes of the game but
were unsuccessful, leaving the M.E.B. Midgets with a well-deserved
win 2-1.

Hockey Wrap-up Week 2 |
The M.E.B. hockey squads
continue parity play as teams find their levels and competition in
some cases is wildly mismatched. The Valley League will make
adjustments in mid-October and place each time in a competitive
bracket. Until then…
![Week2 Roundup](Week2EBYH.jpg)
MITE (7-8 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston.6, Masco 2
Kasabuski Rink, Saugus MA
The Mites had a great start to their season on Sunday with a 6-2 win
over a tough Masco team. Chris Hanifan led M.E.B. off with a strong
start in net and multiple players scored on opening day! Mites are
playing in the new 4 on 4, half-ice format required by USA Hockey’s
Athletic Development Model (ADM). The ADM, through utilization of
LTAD principles, allows hockey teams to integrate training,
competition and recovery programming with relation to biological
development in order to make an athlete out of a kid and make a
hockey player out of an athlete.
SQUIRT (9-10 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 5, Wakefield 4
Valley Forum, Malden MA
PEEWEE (11-12 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 1, Natick 8
Connery Rink, Somerville MA
The M.E.B. Peewee’s took on Natick. In the 1st period Natick came
out physical but Malden/East Boston fought back and found themselves
killing a penalty just 3 minutes into the game. An errant puck found
the corner and Natick was up 1-0. A laser from the point found the
five-hole for Natick’s second goal. Goalie Tristan Goroshko found
his groove and made save after save. M.E.B. was strong until mid-way
through the 2nd period where the M.E.B. 9 man rotation began to lose
a step. Natick capitalized, continued to play the body as well as
the puck with fresh legs. Goroshko let up 1 more in the 2nd on a
breakaway and left the game down 0-3. The Peewee’s continued to play
hard as John Bernbaum and Corey Rufo couldn’t find the back of the
net, but not for lack of trying. The tandem of Ryan Gray and Shamus
Royds found their physic repore in the 3rd, blind passing to each
other to set up shot after shot until finally Gray planted one past
Natick's red-hot goalie. M.E.B. just didn’t have the legs for three
periods of hockey and net minder Anthony Bocchino’s frustration
began to show as Natick relentlessly crashed the net and scored.
BANTAM AAA (13-14 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 4, Andover 1
Volpe Rink, North Andover MA
Bantam AAA's hit the ice at beautiful Merrimack College to take on
Andover. The Andover boys jumped out early with a quick, loose puck
goal 2 minutes in. As the 1st period wound down, momentum began to
switch in favor of M.E.B. At the 9 minute mark of the second period,
with M.E.B. short-handed, the Nick Salgado show began. Breaking in
from the far side, Salgado, in all alone, unloaded a wrist shot
snipe picking the top corner glove side just under the bar to tie
the game at 1 all. The final period had full momentum in our favor
with Salgado getting yet another short-handed breakaway, only to be
stoned by the glove he beat earlier. After a nice penalty kill, Mike
DeFilippo nearly drove it home with Salgado there to jam it in for
his second of the night but Salgado wasn't done yet. Picking up the
puck in the neutral zone, he danced his way, splitting three
defenders on the offensive blue line leading to yet another break
away, this time juking the goalie and potting it into the open net
for the hat trick. With an Andover defenseman threatening
offensively on their own blue line, Salgado stole the puck in his
own end, bursting off on a break-away and ringing his 4th goal of
the game with 3 seconds on the clock giving M.E.B. 4-1 win. A
well-rounded performance by the entire team. Setting up the victory
were assists going to Jared Downey, DeFilippo and Noah Carlson.
BANTAM AA (13-14 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 3, South Boston 1
Cronin Rink, Revere MA
The Bantam AA’s played a new opponent, South Boston at Revere rink
on Saturday, September 14th. It was an intense game with #97 Carson
Tully scoring on a rebound to tie the game up at the end of the
first. It stayed tied 1-1 throughout the second period. By the
beginning of the third M.E.B. showed their horsepower with Marty
Taylor #5 scoring a hard earned goal to make it 2-1. Throughout the
game there was great goaltending by Thomas Guarino who continued to
impress. M.E.B. took a few penalties that left them shorthanded in
the third but first year Bantam #19 Curtis Taddeo was still able to
put the puck in the net with a 3 on 5, ending the game with a two
goal lead 3-1.
MIDGET (15-18 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 3, North Shore Raiders 9
Allied Veterans Rink, Everett MA
Midgets played a non-league game against the North Shore Raiders. In
the 1st period the Raiders took an early lead, scoring in the first
minute. M.E.B. quickly retaliated with #16 Danny Valente scoring. By
the end of the period the score is 2-4 with Nick Bertocchi, #37
putting the puck to the back of the net for M.E.B.’s second goal.
M.E.B. skated with the select Raiders squad for the 2nd period to
stay in the game with the team making some great plays, just unable
to show it on the scoreboard. The 2nd period ended 3-6 with another
goal by Valente, assisted by Bertocchi. No goal scoring by MEB in
the third. The team played until the final whistle with the score of
3-9 which did not reflect the level of play.

Hockey Wrap-up Week 1 |
The M.E.B. Hockey teams
saw their first games of the season this weekend in Parity play
which will continue for the next several weeks until the Valley
League can place all teams as to make them the most competitive.
SQUIRT (9-10 Years Old)
The M.E.B. Squirts took on Salem/Swampscott at the Lynn Rink on
Saturday Sep. 7. Goals in the first by Stevie Arsenault (2), Nick
LaConte (1), and Joe Melanson with a natural hat trick (3). Running
Time began in the 2nd and by the halfway mark Nate Nadow recorded
his first shutout as a Squirt goalie. Joe Melanson and Matthew
Goggin each put one between the pipes. Into the 3rd and Nick Summers
was more than happy to pick up the garbage, scoring two goals on
kick save rebounds. Brendan Curtis couldn’t contain the fastest
wrist shot on the ice and rang two pipes for a goal. Kurt Janscy got
his first career shut-out in net for the second ½ of the game. The
final 13-0.
![Squirts](MEB_Squirts_9-7-13.jpg)
PEEWEE (11-12 Years Old)
The Peewees took on Billerica at the Valley Forum in Malden on
Friday night, September 6. A young team with only two second year
peewee’s were guided by a strong coaching staff headed up by Coach
Jim Taddeo. Despite goals by John Bernbaum, Shamus Royds, Corey Rufo,
and Sean Noonan, M.E.B fell short by the score of 5-4. Goalies Kevin
Ivany and Tristan Goroshko played strong in their first outing of
the year. It was a terrific effort by a young team who have a
promising season ahead of them.
BANTAM AAA (13-14 Years Old)
The MEB Bantam A's opened their season in the Valley League in
Revere against neighboring Melrose. The boys set the tone early in
the first minute of the game with a nice Ryan Noonan goal, his first
of three to wear the "Hat". After that there were three solid goals
and virtually no action for goaltender Anthony Giuliano. After
Melrose scored, MEB gave three more unanswered tallies by Anthony
Cecca, Ryan Miller and Noonan with the latter two goals created by
solid defensive rushes from Nick Salgado and Zachary Rich. Melrose
potted two quickies bringing the game to within three goals at
the end of two. Goals from Miller and Cecca sealed the victory with
an 8-3 final.
BANTAM AA (13-14 Years Old)
Bantam B’s began their season in Tewksbury Sunday night, September 8
with a shaky first period and found themselves down 2-0 by the start
of the second. In the second period the team pulled it together, and
put a lot of pressure on the Groton defense and goaltender, who had
a large presence in the net. They fought hard throughout the second
and into the third, clawing back one goal (Ryan Tosto) and then, in
dramatic fashion with a fast break out of the neutral zone Nick
Capillo scored with just 3 second remaining on the clock to tie
Groton 2 to 2.
MIDGET (15-18 Years Old)
Midgets challenged Nashoba at the Woburn Rink on Friday night,
September 6. Coach Scott Tamagna and M.E.B.’s veterans skated to a
3-3 tie. Calvin Taddeo had a strong game in net. In the 1st period
Danny Valente scored assisted by Michael Goroshko. The 2nd period
say Mark Faia take a great shot that lit the lamp. Paul O’Callahan
netted the 3rd goal. Despite allowing Nashoba to tie, a great
overall first game.
