EAST BOSTON
RESIDENT, RICH OVERTON, SOARS
WITH RADIO SHOW on WERS-FM 88.9FM
Local
resident Rich Overton is
now building new ground
for his Emerson College
non-commercial radio
show. Since May 1999,
Rich has hosted the show
"Women In
Music" on WERS
88.9fm Boston (Emerson
College Radio), becoming
the first male host ever.
Since his run as on-air
host and coordinator of
this well-known show,
this 21-year-old East
Boston resident and
graduate of St
Marys School, has
interviewed and featured
many guests who would
only be expected to
appear on major
commercial radio
stations.

Rich's guests have
included Cyndi Lauper, Billie
Myers, Donna DeLory (Madonna's
longtime back-up singer and
dancer), Jennifer Kimball,
Melissa Ferrick, Christine Lavin,
Lori McKenna, and Jess Klein,
among many others. He has also
started an E-mailing list at WERSWomenInMusic@aol.com
where the listeners can get
upcoming news about the show and
guests. WERS Women In Music airs
Saturdays from 6-10am throughout
Massachusetts and some parts of
Rhode Island and New Hampshire.
Listeners, teachers, and radio
personalities have enabled Rich
to make the show a success. He
has been invited to such award
shows as the Boston Music Awards
and the GLAMAs (Gay/Lesbian
American Music Awards) in New
York City to interview artists.
At these events, Rich spoke with
some well-known artists and
actors including Me'shell
Ndegeocello, Luscious Jackson,
Jill Sobule, Danny Pintauro (of
Who's The Boss), and Hollywood
Squares' Bruce Vilanch. Rich also
was the emcee and DJ at several
local benefits including Jerry
Lewis' Walk For Life (for
Muscular Dystrophy) at the
Esplanade in 1999/2000 and the
American Cancer Society's Relay
for Life at MIT's Steinbrenner
Stadium this past April.
Word-of-mouth publicity has
drawn many local artists and
widely popular musicians to WERS.
Cyndi Lauper recently invited
Rich backstage at a concert to
interview her one-on-one last
summer. As a result, Rich has
been booking artists 2 months in
advance. Artists lined up for the
fall include Ferron, Jennifer
Tefft, Barbara Kessler, The Wild
Colonials, April Hall, and a few
surprises.
This is Rich's senior year at
Emerson College. He is an
audio/radio major with a minor in
public relations. Pretty soon
Rich decides whether to stay in
Boston to work in the music /
radio industry or travel to New
York or Los Angeles. Until then,
he plans to keep up with his
radio show on WERS and host some
LIVE concerts around the Boston
area.
WERS Emerson College Radio has
been around for over 50 years,
winning numerous awards for its
news and programming. Some of the
shows include Coffeehouse
(weekdays 6-10am), Bluesology
(Mon-Thurs 11pm-2am), and
Standing Room Only (Saturdays
10am-2pm). It is the only 100%
student-operated radio station in
a major radio market. Tune in to
WERS on 88.9fm Boston or on the
web at wers.org.
