The Atlantic Works Gallery (AWG) December exhibition will be Entering Art, a collaboration with East Boston High School. Artists’ works include drawings and photographs from talented young artists attending school at East Boston High School. This show opens Saturday, December 5th with a reception from 5-7 p.m. and closes Saturday, December 20th.  There will also be an AWG traditional “Third Thursday” reception on December 18th from 5-7 p.m.

AWG takes pride in being a decades-long mainstay in the East Boston arts community and welcomes all to be a part of our art scene. In an effort to broaden and deepen AWG reach within the East Boston community, the gallery has invited students from East Boston High School to exhibit their work. In doing so, AWG seeks to establish meaningful relationships with young, aspiring artists while concomitantly enriching the AWG community. The success of this collaboration extends beyond the outcome of the show itself and looks like continued mentor/mentee relationships and visitors to the gallery.

All students in the exhibition create work on their own accord, taking inspiration from anime, sports, and places they love among other things. For most creatives, it is easy to remember the first body of work that propelled them to pursue a career in the arts. The bodies of work presented here may be exactly that for students in the show – the students showing, use art to navigate complex times and emotions. They are beginning to form their own creative voices– the work tends to be raw, emotional, and vulnerable– themes often made accessible through a common language such as anime or through shared experiences such as sports.

It is wonderful to prop up creatives starting out on their artist journey from those who have been there, done that and made art happen. AWG members are overwhelmingly mid to late career artists and are well positioned to help students grow artistically and navigate how to maintain an artist practice over a lifetime.

The partnership with East Boston High School has already deepened the AWG connection to the East Boston community. AWG members have had the pleasure of working with students over the last semester in preparation for Entering Art through collaboration with their teachers, Mr. Ronald MacGeorge, Mr. Christopher Leone, Ms. Amanda Dillingham, and Dr. Katie Kimbrell who have made it possible for AWG members to attend weekly art clubs at the high school, host workshops and participate in EBHS events like STEAM day.
