Boston, MA – June 24, 2026 – Latinos for Education hosted its fifth annual Latino Educators Shine Awards at the MCLE Conference Center on Tuesday, honoring Lesley Peña, Multilingual Learner Coordinator at Brooke East Boston. This year, over 50 Latino educators from across the Commonwealth were honored by state legislators for the trailblazing work they do in the classroom every day.

Lesley was recognized by State Representative Adrian Madaro for her dedication and commitment as an educator, as well as for the incredible positive impact she has on students, families, and the broader community. Lesley was one of 15 charter public school teachers from across the state to be recognized.

Senator Liz Miranda (Democrat – 2nd Suffolk) and Representative Michael P. Kushmerek (Democrat – 3rd Worcester) were also honored at this year’s award ceremony for their legislative work in advancing educator diversity and retention. The ceremony featured remarks from Miranda, Kushmerek, and Dr. Regina Robinson, Special Assistant to the Commissioner. Also speaking were key leaders from Latinos for Education, including Amanda Fernandez, CEO and Founder, Jacqueline Monterroso, Director of Policy and Advocacy, and Migdalia Diaz, COO and Massachusetts Interim Executive Director.

Lesley Peña joined Brooke East Boston in 2024 as an Associate Teacher, participating in Brooke’s year-long teacher residency program designed to prepare educators to become lead teachers through professional development, classroom observations, mentorship, and coaching. Before joining Brooke, Ms. Peña interned in an AP Spanish classroom at Revere High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Salem State University and is currently pursuing her master’s degree.
