Why: “Trash to Treasure / De Basura a Tesoro” reflects Surfrider’s core belief that everyone should have access to clean, safe, and welcoming shorelines. Connecting neighbors through creativity and shared experiences fosters pride in East Boston’s waterfront and builds lasting commitment to protect and enjoy it.
How: By combining hands-on care for the harbor with a shared act of creativity, this event turns cleanup into community connection. Collecting and removing trash makes an immediate difference for the shoreline, while the trash-to-art project invites participants to reimagine what waste can become. Together, these experiences show that protecting our coast isn’t just necessary, it can also be fun, collaborative, and rooted in community.
“Our shorelines are healthiest when they bring people together,” said Jackie Sastry, Surfrider Northeast Intern and Tufts University student. “‘’Trash to Treasure / De basura a tesoro’ shows that protecting the waterfront can also mean making friends, being creative, and celebrating the beauty of East Boston’s waterfront.”
