EAST BOSTON COMMUNITY NEWS ARCHIVE

Bob Nakashian, one of the founders of the East Boston Community News, recently noted that the Special Collection archives at Northeastern University Snell Library has added 169 illustrations of Joe Porzio to its collection. Joe’s materials may be found for viewing here: https://repository.library.northeastern.edu/collections/neu:ww72bf712. Joe was a longtime community activist and contributor to the Community News which gladly published his wonderful political and social cartoons. He was one of a kind. He contributed to 201 editions of the paper from October 16, 1970 to February 6, 1979.

The digitization of Joe’s work was made possible by Giordana Mecagni, Head Archivist Special Collections, and Molly Brown, Reference and Outreach Archivist of Northeastern University for making this happen. Joe Porzio died in 1979.

Notable and quotable from one legendary activist Martin Coughlin on Porzio:

“Joe Porzio was a tireless worker in behalf of the East Boston Community, a man whose interest and his sin-cerity in behalf of East Boston people cannot be questioned. Joe was a tireless and ex-tremely active member of the East Boston Neigqborhood Council and a dozen other East Boston and greater Boston civic organizations. Joe’s untimely death will leave a great void, I am sure, in all of these committees. His daily efforts in behalf of the working men and women who were unable to attend the hundreds of public hearings, cannot easily be forgotten.”
