WHAT
A free community event where community members donate laptops with unsupported operating systems or bring their own to get a secure, free operating system called Linux Mint. Donated Laptops will be refurbished and sent to other non-profits to bridge the digital divide and reduce e-waste.

BACKGROUND
Earlier this week, on Oct. 14, Microsoft cut off support for Windows 10, which leaves hundreds of millions of computers without critical security updates. Not only will this likely increase cyber risks for impacted users, it will also cause a spike in computer replacements and electronic waste. The Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group is working with a global coalition to extend software support and rescue stranded computers. The popular video explainer from PIRG’s campaign director lays it out.
