[Editor’s note: The late Ginnie St. Cyr was a longtime East Boston activist who wrote a column for the Community News decades ago. Her interests were far and wide from her home on Eagle Hill. Ginnie worked at East Boston Little City Hall. One of Ginnie’s main engagements was working with the Social Centers particularly at the Trinity House. Seeking to preserve her legacy, her daughter Lisa St. Cyr –in collaboration with the Social Centers –created a fund which will benefit youth in her former neighborhood. The following is a letter drafted by Lisa and Kimberly Dawson Ohiomoba, the Social Center’s Chief Development Officer. Offered in Ginnie’s spirit, the fund certainly is a cause worthwhile organized by one of the neighborhood’s oldest social service agencies, the Social Centers. Ginnie would be proud.]

We are honored to share the Ginnie St. Cyr Memorial Fund, created in memory of our beloved Ginnie. Ginnie was a kind and elegant woman with a sharp sense of humor and a deep, lasting bond with the East Boston community.

Throughout her life, Ginnie dedicated herself to uplifting others. She served as President of East Boston Social Centers, East Boston Community News, and East Boston Little City Hall. She was also affiliated with Trinity Neighborhood House and Trinity Camp, where she served as a mentor for many years. Her impact even extends to a trail named in her honor at Westford’s East Boston Camps, a place where many hold cherished memories.

After 25 years of working for the City of Boston, Ginnie retired to her hometown in Maine, where she continued to volunteer and remained an active voice in her community.

Established in collaboration with East Boston Social Centers, the Memorial Fund reflects Ginnie’s enduring dedication to supporting those in need. Inspired by the Social Centers’ motto—“When all give, all gain”—this fund will carry on her legacy by providing financial assistance to our community.

As we shape the fund’s impact, we want to highlight an opportunity that aligns with Ginnie’s passion for uplifting youth—the future of our community. Each summer, East Boston Social Centers serves over 160 children and teens, offering safe, enriching childcare and educational experiences. One of the key goals is to ensure that every child, regardless of financial background, has access to transformative learning opportunities.

Supporting field trips through the Memorial Fund will provide children with the chance to explore, learn, and create lasting memories. Thank you for your generosity and for honoring Ginnie’s spirit in such a meaningful way.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Dawson Ohiomoba
