Students at Curtis Guild Elementary School in East Boston took center stage earlier this month, showcasing their newly-acquired musical knowledge during two winter concerts held on December 2 and December 4 in the school’s auditorium.
Under the direction of music teacher Ms. Gladis Henriquez, the performances reflected weeks of preparation, practice, and teamwork. Over the past several months, Ms. Henriquez has been developing a incremental music curriculum that builds foundational skills while emphasizing ensemble playing and collaboration. With this approach, students progressed from individual skill development to confident group performance.
The concerts highlighted not only the students’ growing musical abilities, but also their capacity to listen to one another, work together, and perform as a cohesive ensemble. For many students, the performances marked an important milestone—offering a chance to play in front of a live audience, build confidence, and experience the rewards of sustained effort after months of focused practice.
Students performed a mix of group pieces and solo selections, including popular songs such as “We Will Rock You,” “Best Day of My Life,” and a selection of winter-themed favorites.
The instruments used in the performances were provided through an EdVestors grant awarded to East Boston Public Schools in 2022, which was designed to expand access to quality instruments and strengthen music education across the district. Since the grant’s implementation, student participation and interest in school band programs have continued to grow.
Families, school staff, and community members filled the auditorium, creating a warm and encouraging atmosphere that made the concerts especially meaningful for the young performers. The events served as a celebration not only of musical achievement, but also of perseverance, collaboration, and the joy of learning through the arts.
