Winthrop Republican Town Committee says it invited Sen. Lydia Edwards but she declined.
The Winthrop Republican Town Committee (WRTC) is hosting a Meet the Candidates Night on Tuesday, October 8, at 5:00 PM at the Winthrop Senior Center. This nonpartisan event is designed to help voters make informed decisions by providing them with direct access to candidates and their policy positions. The WRTC firmly believes that an informed electorate is essential to building and maintaining a strong community, state, and country.
For this particular event, both State Senate candidates, Lydia Edwards and Jeanna Tamas, were invited to participate and share their vision and policies with the community. While Senate candidate Jeanna Tamas has accepted the invitation and will be in attendance, Senator Lydia Edwards has declined. The committee expressed disappointment at Senator Edwards’ decision but emphasized the importance of hearing from Tamas, a fresh voice on the political scene. Tamas, a Winthrop native, will have the opportunity to elaborate on her positions and introduce her policies to those unfamiliar with her platform.
Candidates Night has a long-standing history in Winthrop, originally conceived in 2018 by a WRTC member as an opportunity for local residents to meet and hear from Town Council candidates. Since its inception, this nonpartisan event has grown to include evenings with local, state, and Congressional candidates and has even expanded to cover informational sessions on pressing community issues. The WRTC sees these events as a valuable tool for informing the public, fostering open dialogue, and ensuring voters have the knowledge they need to make their best choices at the ballot box.
WRTC Chairman Paul Caruccio noted the committee’s passion for educating the public, stating, “We (the committee) are passionate about informing the public. The Committee believes giving the public the information, policies, and facts about candidates allows the public to make their own best decision at the ballot box. This will lead to better governance for everyone.”
This event offers an opportunity to hear directly from candidate Jeanna Tamas, allowing voters to weigh her positions against Lydia Edwards, whose record is already known.
The event is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM with a 25-minute informal meet-and-greet session, where attendees can engage directly with Jeanna Tamas. This will be followed by a formal informational session from 5:25 PM to 6:00 PM, during which the candidate will respond to 5-6 prepared questions from the WRTC. Afterward, members of the audience will have the chance to submit their own questions for Tamas to address. Although the formal program is set to end at 6:00 PM, attendees are welcome to stay afterward to mingle, ask additional questions, or discuss topics directly with the candidate.
For those unable to attend, the event will be broadcast by Winthrop’s WCAT, as well as on Revere and Boston cable channels, and it will also be available for replay on YouTube.
