National Endowment for the Humanities announces Summer Scholars for Professional Development
Cindy Mendez Moreno, a local teacher from Excel Academy Charter High School (East Boston, MA), has been selected as a NEH Summer Scholar from a national applicant pool to attend one of 35 summer seminars and institutes supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The Endowment is a federal agency that, each summer, supports these enrichment opportunities at colleges, universities, and cultural institutions, so that teachers can study with experts in humanities disciplines.
Cindy Mendez Moreno will participate in a Summer Institute named Tales from the Chihuahuan Desert: Borderlands Narratives about Identity and Binationalism. The two-week, residential program will be held July 16th to July 30th, 2023, at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and directed by Drs. Ignacio Martínez (UTEP Department of History) and R. Joseph Rodríguez (St. Edward’s University).
The 24 teachers selected to participate in the tuition-free program each receive a stipend of $2,200 to cover their travel, study, and living expenses and meet eligibility criteria outlined by NEH. NEH funds a wide variety of programs that can help teachers expand their humanities knowledge, engage in concentrated research, or improve their classroom teaching.
Topics for the 35 seminars and institutes offered for teachers this summer include:
Women and the American Revolution; Music, History, and Culture of the Mississippi Delta; Migration, Work, and Settlement in the “Other” California; Connecting Veterans, Teachers and Students through Oral History; Muslims in America’s Midwest; Hidden Histories of the Founding Era; Holocaust and Genocide Education; Early Asian and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Americans in the Pacific Northwest; The Democratization of the Automobile Industry; Centering Youth Agency in the Civil Rights Movement; Saipan’s Land and Sea; Race, Capitalism, Democracy 1870-1920; The FDR Presidency and Memorial; The Salem Witch Trials; Literature Instruction at American Schools; American Soldiers in American Wars; Migrant Waves in the Making of America; Places and People in Colonized New England; Slavery in the Colonial North; Rethreading the Needle of the Native American History Narrative; Tales from the Chihuahuan Desert: Borderlands Narratives about Identity and Binationalism,Harlem’s Education Movements; The First Amendment in 21st Century America; History and Revitalization of the American Bison.
The Summer Scholars who participate in the UTEP NEH Summer Institute will teach almost 4,000 American students the following 2023–2024 academic year.
