Project Updates for Weekends of 5/26 and 6/2

Tunnel Open

Weekend of May 26, 2023

  • Due to an anticipated increase in regional traffic volumes during Memorial Day weekend, the Sumner Tunnel/Route 1A South will remain open the weekend of May 26. Regularly scheduled closures will resume the following weekend of June 2.

Weekend of June 16, 2023

  • During the Juneteenth weekend, the Sumner Tunnel/Route 1A South will remain open the weekend of June 16. Regularly scheduled closures will resume the following weekend of June 23.

Tunnel Closed

Weekend of June 2, 2023

  • The Sumner Tunnel/Route 1A South will be closed on Friday, June 2 at 11:00 p.m. and will re-open to traffic on Monday, June 5 at 5:00 a.m.

Travel Tips throughout the Sumner Rehabilitation project

East Boston Ferry from Lewis Wharf to Long Wharf

The East Boston ferry will be in operation throughout the first full closure of the tunnel and will be fare free for all riders.

Preparing for the first full 8-week closure (7/5/23 – 8/31/23)

MassDOT encourages users of the Sumner Tunnel/Route 1A South to prepare for the first of two 8-week shutdowns of the tunnel. Expect extra travel time, adjust your commute time, work from home if you can, and/or consider alternatives to driving. These alternatives include Blue Line, Commuter Rail, Silver Line, Ferry, and Bus. Learn more about your options by visiting the MBTA trip planner.
